Can anyone tell me how to do this or what parts I will need and the extent of teardown and time that it will take that has done it. Also does it really help.

Thanks,

Josh

Mike is right don't put one item buy the whole set and put in. The bolt holes are larger in the shafts and you will have to drill out the threaded keepers or get the ones of the 520/530. The later models they added the hi-lo locker as they would drift out from pulling large loads on the road. This was all an improvement arrangement. I would be sure to get a real good upper shaft with as less wear as possible as wear allows the gear to slightly tilt. This was what caused the creap out.

Thanks for the info, I found the auction and plan on getting it. I think this will solve my problem because if you hold the shifter it will stay in place. Is that the only modifaction is drilling the holes on the set screws? Thanks for all your help on this.

Josh

Those newer forks are not totally fool proof after all the years they have parts that can wear out and still let the gear pop out. Just inspect them good before you put them in.Once in you can test them before you button it up by using a crow bar and put one in a gear at a time. Then try to pry it out of gear,it should not move unless the inside part the lever contacts is first actuated. The ones I had trouble with were in 720-730 and a small hard pin would wear out on the end. It could be fixed by building it up with hard weld.

right, the bolt is a little larger and consequently the screw has to have a larger hole. I drilled mine out. As I recall the later models also used a lockwasher instead of the wiring. I think you will really like it setup. I had my B in a pull and it would come out abruptley. An old JD mechanic told me of the upgrade. The center of the part slides and releases the detent. Be sure to use a couple of plastic ties to hold the 1/3 assy together or it will shift and you'll loose the loading spring. You'll see what it is when you get it.

Not all of the 50's have them,so be careful when buying parts. I put some B shifters in a 50 once. I think I had to do a little grinding on the forks so they would clear the 50 ones. I think if you go with the whole set it will fit better.

the 520 and 530 also had a locker for the hi-lo.

The rails and parts will interchange.

Like Kurt said get your hands on a 50 parts book and see which parts you'll need. I have a 70 parts book which shows a seperate kit of parts available to install the locks on that model, I would think the 50's catalog would list this too. Looks like there's over 30 pieces needed. I don't know if the 50 parts will fit the late B, they should but you don't know for sure unless you hear from someone who's done it. The locks will keep the tractor from coming out of gear under load if the locking mechanism itself is not worn.

Josh,

I have not had a 50 apart, but I am thinking that the detent locker could only involve the shift fork, the detent, and possibly the rail. So, I would not think the teardown would be all that bad. Seems like I saw a set of the the forks and rails listed on e-bay yesterday for either a 50 or a 520.

Picking up the parts book from deere is probably your best option to find out what you need.

Kurt

Yep. Ebay has what you need from Cook tractor, this is 520 but interchanges on the B, has the hi-low locker also. Go for it....
