I know this topic is covered on here quiet a bit but I could not find anything similar to my situation. I recently took apart the transmission and differential on my 51 b because of noise and because it would virtually slip out of every gear. To make a long story short I used good parts out of a parts tractor with much less wear to re install everything. Now all the gears hold when under load except 1st. Is it possible that I didn't adjust the shift rail enough. All of the bearings seemed good and tight and the 1st gear still looked to be in good shape with out any twisting or broken teeth. Also when it jumps out of first it takes it a while, but it moves the shifter out of gear. Another question is, I want to pull with it so would second gear be low enough. The engine is pretty strong and fresh.
Thanks for the help

Josh

No longer into B's but had 5 of them and know your problem. John Deere added a detent locker with the later model 50's to prevent just what is happening to you. The gear is walking out and this is partially due to a wear area position on the upper shaft. The locker hold the gear in position. All the late model 50's/520/530 had these as well as the larger tractors in the series. 2nd gear will get you nowhere in the pull as tractor does not have enough power to break traction. If you look in the 50's series parts book you will see what I'm referring to. The B can be retro fitted. Good luck.

No I did not replace the springs with new ones but I did use the best ones out of the ones I had. Looking back I wish that I would have

I.m sorry I can.t help with your gear problem, but 2nd gear will probably be to fast for pulling. We have a 3.5 mph limit in our club. We have a couple guys who will pull in 2nd on a soft track, but they have to be very careful with the throttle or they will blow the horn on the sled. Actually, they have gotten quite good at it, very often they are 1st and 2nd in the class. If your B has a strong engine you could probably do the same. I would definitly use 1st gear on a hard track. Forgot to mention these guys have A,s and B,s.

Can anyone give me the part numbers or scan and email me a copy of the model 50 transmission teardown page from the manual. I would be really interested in doing the retrofit. How difficult is the procedure for those who have done it. And is it an internal modification where you wouldn't be able to see it.

Thanks for the help!

Josh
