720D crankshaft end play

Cannot slide flywheel on far enough to get end play in tolorence. End play measures .025". Have slid flywheel off and everything looks fine. Should I be looking on the clutch side for something?

Do you have an early or late model 720 ? as there is a serial number break on how they adjust.

From serial number 7214900 and below ( yours ) you adjust that end play with shims like Frank described. I wouldn't pull one apart without a parts book handy to double check everything is correct for your model. I have had a few of these apart before and most all of them had some kinda mismatched parts in there. If you make a spacer out of an exhaust pipe it will really help get that end play right without installing that fylwheel everytime and checking it.I think this homemade tools dimensions may be in the I & T manuals.

End play is controlled by fiber thrust washers on either side of a thrust plate that is located behind the thrust cover that is visible behind the flywheel. You may want to consult a book to see the diagram. Shims are added/deleted until the proper endplay of .005"-.010" is achieved.
