Just bought a JD 440 Industrial to restore. The electrical system is a mess. I would like to convert to 12 volts - I am starting from scratch with all new wiring, starter, and generator. Anybody know the best way to make this work, and how to wire it?

Start with about a 1978 chevrolet alternator. Don't worry about the starter. It will be just fine on 12 volts. Mount a 12 volt battery anywhere that you want on the tractor. Then, just change all the light bulbs to 12 volts. And what little bit of wiring that there is should be pretty simple.

You didn't need the starter. I used a self exciting single wire alternator and a 12v battery. You have a single wire from the alt to the dash. You will need a reducer going to the coil and everything else remains unchanged. Runs like a champ and starts right up even after sitting for months. You can fill a small trash can with all the old wire you won't need anymore.
