I have a 1965 4020 diesel synchro that every so often will increase engine rpm on its own. I start the engine with the hand throttle in the start position, giving about 800+ rpm, and then sometimes the engine will start to speed up on its own to 2500+ rpm. I have tried blipping the foot throttle, with no effect, and the only way I have found to get the rpm down is to move the hand throttle to the off position, and then bring it back up slightly. I thought there might be a stuck linkage somewhere but haven"t found one. It does not do this every time I start the tractor, but might operate normally for ten of 15 minutes before this happens. ANybody have an idea what is going on?
Cheers - Alan

Thanks a bunch for the help, guys. One of my big fears has been not being able to get the rpm down and blow the motor. I appreciate the pump shop address, and I"ll use them if I can"t get something local.
Cheers - Alan

I'd say it was definitely the governor. I have a 64 model and you can bank on taking the pump off and rebuilding the governor in there every 5 years. other than that I have no complaint in the world with that old girl

I'd get that pump off and checked out ASAP before the tractor runs wild and grenades itself. The governors on these Roosa-Master pumps are their most troublesome area. I've dealt with Central Fuel Injection service in Estherville Iowa, good people and were reasonably priced. They likely would have a rebuilt pump in stock for your 4020, or rebuid yours if you like. 712-362-4200. www.centralfuel.com

I'm thinking that is a sign of the internal pumps governor weight retainer going bad. Know any good cheap pump shops ?
