I just purchased a JD 40V "Southern Special" last week and was wondering when I go to repaint it how these tractors came out of the factory. Were the hoses painted green? What about the exhaust manifold? Is there a place to find this info? Also, does the nose cone on this tractor (1953) have the metallic John Deere name plate or just a sticker? I see alot of JD 40 with the metal metallic John Deere piece but mine just came with a stick and no holes for that piece. Is it supposed to just be a sticker? Thanks for any help.

Josh,

The hoses are generally thought to not be painted. Some say they were but I think that looks terrible. THe manifold was painted but that didn"t last long due to the heat. I painted the last one I did with silver high temp header paint. Not quite original but looks better that rust. I"ve not been able to find JD green in the header paint and the muffler was silver, not black so that"s the basis for the color choice.

The nose had the John Deere lettering decal. The chrome emblem wasn"t used until the 56 420s came out. That"s why your nose doesn"t have holes.

You can check my site www.JohnDeere40.com for picture and info. Another good one is www.JD40.com.

Congratulations, the 40V is a rare tractor. They weren"t called the Southern Special however, even though most were sold in the south. Southern Special was name given to the 320 hy-breds. The 40V was the Vegetable or just Special.
