i have an old ford back hoe and if it happens to sit out in the rain i keep the back end covered with a tarp because someway rain gets in to the thans and rear end. i was fortunate enough to have a big plug on the top of the trans and rear end that are filler plugs and i poured five gallons of kerosene in them and drove the tractor around for about 5 minutes stopping and starting alot to splash the kero around. i drained that out and used an air blower to blow as much of the fluid left down in there out the plug. i don't know if thats safe to do where there is a clutch pack involved or not, so ask your dealer about flushing it out if you do find the fluids to be milky.

You have a power shifted reverser.I am presently working a 1520 like yours that will not move at all. If you haven't changed the hydrauilc filter(part number AR 75603), do that first, right after you check the hydraulic oil level. There is a dipstick at your right heel when sitting in the seat. The filter is under the tractor on the right side under the seat.Takes a 3/4" wrench. Oil should be pretty much clear and not milky in color(water in oil if thick and milky)If it is milky do the following:, change the oil. There are two drain plugs to take out.You will need a 5 gallon bucket under each drain.Let it drip at least over night.Replace the oil( I strongly recommend you use genuine Deere Hy Gard oil) and check to see if that cures your problem. If it doesn't cure it and you don't have a lot of experience with power shifts, hydraulics, etc, then I would recommend you take it to a Deere dealer shop.

Its a confusing set up if you are not familiar with it.Just the opposite of most tractors. The PTO clutch is in front and the reverser is behind that.It has a clutch pack and a brake pack which operates a sun gear assy.

I didn't see mention of pulling the suction screen while it was drained out. This should also be a must do ! and check for iron filings. Not sure which side you get to it on that model ? does it have a square hole in it to use a breaker bar to loosen it ? It's been a loooog time since I did one.

Didn't know about suction filter until I read all kinds of stuff on this forum last night. I guess I have to drain it then I can pull the suction filter ? I looked for it this morning and didn't see where it was of course it is in the middle of a 900 acre pasture with 2 new inches of new snow on it but I think I have to pull off the right foot plate to get to it. My friend says I need to bleed the air out of it this don't seem right? Any guesses on how much JD hydro juice I will loose when I drain and pull suction filter I only have about 4 gals left here at the house.

That doesn't sound like a very nice place to work on it. If it has oil in it and still moves forward I'd be heading for the shed. I got a bad feeling your tractors going to be down awhile.

Sorry I didn't mention the suction screen. It shoud be pulled. It is very near the filter--just behind it,I believe. The 1520 that I am working on takes a 5/8" Allen wrench to remove the plug.Sometimes the screen can be a bear to get out if the screen catches on the transmission case.Catch the hydraulic oil in clean buckets ,being very careful to keep it clean and then use it over again unless it is milky.

If everything checks out,the next step will be to put a pressure gauge on the valve to see if you have adequate pressure.

Bleeding won't help and you don't have to remove the step to take the suction screen out.You will however, have to remove the right step to check the reverser operating pressure.

Well it is blowing like the wolf from the three pigs at the moment so maybe tomorrow I can get to it. I doubt the oil is milkly cause I just added 7 gallons a couple weeks ago when I lost the transmission filter gasket and pumped it out on the ground real fast. Not 30 mins. on that oil. So please stay tuned and I will let you know what I find next. TKX a ton.

Oh it can't be broken I need it to feed cows with. Another thought if it is the suction filter how come it still goes forward?

You weren't clear on that in your original post I read it that it quit completely afer a couple of shifts. If its the reverse only then it is likely the brake on the sun gear is in need of attention.

I am sorry. What do I need to do to the brake on the sun gear. I sure hope it is just a adjustment.

It would be pretty much impossibe for me to diagnose the problem from here, now that I know where the problem is.The first thing I would do if I were there,is go through all the adjustment proceedures of the clutch and shift valve, then put a pressure gauge on the valve, but I really suspect you have a problem in the brake pack and that means the tractor would need to be split and the reverser taken out and overhauled.Good luck on finding someone that is familiar with the reverser.Sorry I can't help you more, bob

Don't be sorry you have been a big help. I think I will let the snow melt down a couple days and load it on a trailer and haul it home to start those little checks you are talking about. I will get back on this fourm and let you know what I find. However I have a feeling like you that I better be finding someone for a major repair.
