51 A steering wobble/disk size

I have a 51 Model A narrow front with roll-o-matic. The steering is fine in 5th gear, but in 6th going down the road the entire front assembly wobbles. I've accessed the steering gear box from the top and the front and everything seems to be tight. Where should I place shims to tighten it up?

Second question is what size disk would she be able to pull?

Thanks

Jon,

I had the same problem with my "51 B. The whole front rollomatic wheel assembly would wobble back and forth when driving in 6th gear. I found I had four separate problems, all of which I had to correct to get it right.

The first was with the worm and sector in the steering box, I had to replace the worn sector gear before I could get it adjust up to spec.

The second was a damaged hub spindle thread which kept me from being able to properly adjusting the front wheel/hub.

The third was a broken tooth on the rollomatic sector.

The fourth turned out to be the vertical steering shaft. It had been replaced at some point, and had not been installed/aligned correctly. I ended up having to replace both the shaft and the rollomatic housing (ouch)

If all this checks out OK on your tractor, I would suggest checking the bushings in the steering pedestal, and check for a damaged tire or Rim.

It is also possible that you may have a sheared rivet where the vertical steering shaft connects with the rollomatic assembly, or the shaft may be bent.

I would check for bad tires, rims and a sheared rivet before going to the trouble of pulling the vertical shaft.

Good luck,

Kurt

Have you had a chance to pull the hubs and check the spindle threads and hub bearings? If the threads are bad, you might not be able to draw up the nut tight, and if the bearings are bad, things might also wobble around. Quick check is to jack up the front of the tractor, and put a hand at the top and bottom of each wheel, and see if you can rock it back and forth on the spindle.

You might also check to see if you have broken or excessivly worn rollomatic gear teeth. It's not too hard to pull this assembly apart. Again, you can also tell a lot without much dissasembly by jacking up the front, remove both wheels, grab both hubs (or spindles if you have the hubs off) and pull up and down on one while holding the other steady. Try this through the full range of motion and see if you have excessive play indicating a broken or worn tooth.
