My John Deere 70 gas has had a seepy head gasket. I could smell the antifreeze in the exhaut when first started. It sat since summer and when trying to start it last weekend I found one cylinder with a great deal of antifreeze in in. Always has had good power and started good. Hear are my questions. #1 - what are the recommended steps in replacing the gasket? #2 - are head gaskets from all companys going to give good service? #3 - Any special tricks? I thought I would have the head freshened up at the machine shop. Also, what causes the valve springs to break? Age?? I replaced one a year ago without removing the head and now another is broken? Thank you very much. andy

Deburr the nuts also and use the lead washers from JD under nuts.

The studs and washers can stretch from age, use and previous tinkerers who didn't use a torque wrench. No head gasket will hold if the head isn't clamped down.

The head and block sealing surfaces have to be true and flat or no new gasket is going seal it. Have the head resurfaced and check for worn guides and valves and seats done. If you aren't going to pull the block off for a rering job check carefully for cracks at head end. The block may need resurfaced too if you decide to pull it off. JD or Felpro gaskets will work with some sealer and tighten it from center outwards. Yes the springs can get old and worn guides and rocker arm assembly doesn't help either so check rockers for wear too.
