I have completely dismantled my 1950 JD model B and am now in the process of reassembling the tractor.

I just completed installing the powershaft bevel pinion/drive shaft. The powershaft bearing cover with shims (gaskets) controls the amount of backlash (clearance) between the bevel gear and bevel pinoin/power shaft. In adjusting the backlash without the lead washers as called for in the manual,I tightened the the two cap screws holding the bearing cover in place snugly so that it was difficult to turn them any tighter without using a good deal of force. I added the lead washers, and am unable to get the cap screws back to that tight position without unduely flatening (pancaking)the lead washers. I stopped tightening when the washers began to enlarge from the pressure and become mishaped. Note that the cap screw heads are drilled to accomodate wire to prevent loosening.

How tight should they be and if too tight will the sealing properties of the washers be lost?

Any suggestions from the experienced JD restorers and mechanics will be appreciated.

Tighten them on down, just like you did on the head. That is a sealing point and you need to squeeze some lead in and around the threads. It will pack itself as you tighten the bolts and Lock wire it in a direction that if one bolt was to loosen it will pull the other tighter.

"Clooney" is correct. Dont make any allowances in torque for lead washers.

I've had many of these apart and have not been involved with any lead washers....with the shims you are fully tightening. Don't see the need....do use the wire...

Go ahead and tighten the bolts good and tight. Let the lead washers squeeze out, some lead will remain under bolt head. The lead washers are there to seal & LUBE the bolt head. Tighten as though there was no lead washers there.
