I'm in the middle of a bad tranny in a 720 gasser. Does anybody know if there is a commercially available socket for the retainer on the lower tranny shaft? It needs to have a long reach because of the length of the shaft. It looks like I may need to weld up my own.

Here is a pic of one that I made. I used some bushing stock that I got from a guy who builds trailers.

That locknut on my transmission was really on there. This is what it took to get it off. I wrecked three home made tools before I got one made strong enough.

If you are refering to the snap ring, I used a snap ring pliers to get it out and put it back in.. Now if my memory serve me right the tran snap ring was changed on the later models,.. (This a two piece shaft correct?} What help me was to go to my local dealer and had them make me a copy of how the gears went in the trans. I replaced all the busted ones and put it back together and it still works today. This was the first time I had ever taken a tranmission apart. Good Luck Ben

This isn't a snap ring. On the outside left end of the bottom shaft is a retainer nut that takes a 4 post hub socket to remove. Somebody smashed this one fairly well hoping to prevent it's untimely removal. Guess what.....it worked!

I think I may of altered a socket for a 4 wheel drive Chevy truck on mine. Alot of them are loose and can be removed with a punch and hammer without too much damage.

Thanks Mike! It is loose and would have come of easily, but some he-man punched the dickens out of it in between the splines on the shaft. I have made several attempts to recover the nut but I'm no artist. It may come off without too much trouble if I get a 4 spline socket made up for it.

I did find out tonight that Dad was able to score another nut today for $10 so we may just drive that one off with a punch and hammer.

I made a tool to remove and install these retainers out of a couple of pipe fittings. I found a reducer coupling where the outside diameter of the larger end matched the outside diameter of the retainer. I then layed out the pattern on the end, and used a small grinder and file to shape the end. I then screwed a short pipe nipple into the other end, and brazed it to the reducer. I then drilled a hole through the nipple so I could put a bar through it to use as a handle. Worked real well.

I"d post a picture of it here if I knew how, otherwise I could e-mail a picture to you if you are interested.

Kurt

After tightened it is too be staked in at least one place into those splines. I put some locktight on them too as most all of them I've seen are loose after pounding around the fields all those years. To unstake them I take an old punch and grind a tapered point on it and drive it in the splines to try to get the flange up.
