Gasket Sealant

I will be replacing all radiator/coolant gaskets on my 1936 Model D. Is there any value to use a gasket sealant during the gasket replacement process.

Permatex is certainly a good product, but I have
done two ground up restorations using a sealer
called Gaskacinch which also has been around a
long time.
I had to remove a part I had recently sealed
with a 1/32" thick gasket. When pried apart
the gasket had split apart in the middle, with
equal amounts on both parts, no sealant fail
at all. Good for threads too.
Not saying one is better than the other, just
works for me. CalJim

Where do you buy this sealer? I don't recall ever seeing it. I'm always ready to try new ones.

Lots of brand of gasket sealer out there but be careful using the silicone RTV stuff and it will let some some gaskets like thin narrow ones on radiators slide out on you. The Permatex black "right stuff" works well though if you let it set a bit before putting things together. The #3 Aviation is hard to beat for all around sealer though and still one of my favorites too along side High Tack.

LocTite sells several interesting gasket makers, builders, stiffeners, thickeners, replacers, intensifiers, etc. That said, I have always used a gasket "dope" on radiator and water pipe gaskets, and I like the old reliable, forever pliable, stickier than snot, paint over it if it smears,removable with lacquer thinner on a rag, brushable Permatex. I even put a blob of it on bolts so they seal, don't rust becasue no air or moisture can get in, and they come back out clean the next time. Toss 'em in a can of lacquer thinner and they're cleaned up.

It's pretty cheap, too.

Yep.

"The old reliable, forever pliable" Permatex No. 3.

Don"t know how long Permatex has been making that stuff (Permatex products have been around since 1909, according to Permatex"s history), but I"ve been using it since the early "60"s as a kid working as a mechanic"s helper ("painting" gaskets was a job left to the helper).

And you and Glen in TX above are right on - it"s good, low-tech, and cheap.

The story is that a chemist friend of Barney Oldfield developed it for Barney when he was forever blowing head gaskets. So it's been around a while.

KenC -- After over 70 years in the field, those mating surfaces have to be less than good. Asking a gasket to make the bridge dry is asking for leaks. Yes, I recommend a sealer. I am at the threshold of the very same task as you -- putting my unstyled radiator back together.

Go to the JD-H Restoration Site (below) and one-click on COOLING SYSTEMS. As you get down into the article, radiator disassembly and the later build-up are discussed, and gasket sealing is part of the discussion. The keyword on sealant is (as always) use sparingly. It doesn't have to be oozing out everywhere! (PatB)
