Hi guys, its been a while. Hope everybody had a good Christmas and New Year's holiday. You all have helped me out a lot in the past and I need you again. I read this form almost daily and have learned a lot. If you remember I have a 50 A and it has a pretty noisy trans. It has the same noise in all gears a growling like sound but only when pulling up hill or even on level ground but down hill is quiet as can be. Some tell me not to worry about it they are all a little noisy. But its embarrassing if someone is around to hear it. I would like to tear into it but have never did this before and am a little afraid to. Where should I start? Take the top off and look for loose bearings or badly worn gears or do I need to take the side covers off to like I said I have never did this before. I have a manuel but reading it and doing it are always different for me. Any help would be appreciated a lot. Thanks guys!

My old man thought his 49 A had a growling transmission and was only a couple of weeks away from tearing into it when my 51 B started growling occasionally too. I accidently let my right foot depress the right brake pedal an inch or so and the growl stopped. I mentioned this to him and he tried it on his A and found it was his brake causing his howling, not his tranny. Then F-I-T told us about his 49 A that had the brake pinion break and ended up destroying his main case. So, next time you hear the growling, try pressing each brake pedal in a little bit and see if the growling stops. If it does, you just need to pull the brake assembly off and re-bush the pinion. If it doesn't...

Could be that the problem is with the first reduction gear. See if the noise is coming from where the first reduction gear meshes with the clutch assembly. If the bearing is bad in the first reduction gear housing. This can allow the inputshaft/reduction gear to wobble around, and it will wear these gear faces with the clutch. You can remove the small cover on the reduction gear at this bearing location and get an idea of its health. It is also not too big of a job to remove the clutch assembly and inspect the gear faces. You can also reach in and grab the first reduction gear and see if it moves around. If it does, you are going to be into at least removing the first reduction gear cover.
