Since I got rid of the solenoid on my 1020 gas tractor I've been wondering about adding a shutoff valve to the gas line. Is it necessary?

There may allready be one at the bottom of the tank. That solenoid was just to shut off the gas going into the main fuel jet to help run on after shut off.

I'm aware of the shut off under the tank. I was thinking of something more convenient.

Now that I don't have a solenoid I'm depending on the float bowl to shut down the gas. If the float bowl gets stuck or fails it seems that gas would just keep running. Just wondering what others do in this situation

Like I was trying to explain that solenoid never did shut off the fuel to the float bowl, just the main nozzle so it always was just depending on the float needle and seat to shut it off.

I get what your saying Mike.

Maybe I don't have a clear picture in my mind of the functioning of the carb. Where would the gas leak to if the float needle failed to shut off the gas with a solenoid in place versus no solenoid?

I think it would overflow the same place which should be at the top of the bowl where the vent is. It should then start to flow into the intake side of the carb. which should have a drain hole and drip from there. Check to make sure the drain is not plugged up. Alot of those type carbs. have what looks like porous brass or steel wool packed in the hole so gas can seep through but dirt won't get sucked in the engine.

Thanks Mike for the clearing me up on of what's going on with the gas overflow.

Do you think a shutoff valve in the gas line would help with dieseling?

I have the idle set pretty low and this seems to solve the problem for the most part.

I had a 440 gas crawler that would diesel badly when shutting off and I just keep the idle speed screw out enough so I could stall it out by pulling back all the way on the throttle. If I wanted it to idle I just had to bump the lever up some. If you have trouble with the carb. leaking rebuild it and install a new needle valve this should take care of it. If the tractor sits alot then maybe an added shut off would help give piece of mind.

That's exactly how I have my tractor set up,idle screw backed off so I can stall it. Tractor does sit around a lot. I may just add a gas shutoff
