DRL and BillyLee are both wrong, I have a straight pipe with lots of carbon and mine don't backfire. It's a too lean mixture and the way the carb is set, yours just needs some more fine tuning. I suspect that you probably are trying too hard to avoid any black smoke which SHOULD be seen on deceleration - just a trace.

Not trying to be smart, but sounds like a normal two cylinder JD to me. Especially if it has a worn muffler or straight pipe. They fire on every compression and exhaust stroke, so when you throttle down, there is more unburnt fuel at first and it is probably igniting during the exhaust stroke.

Sounds like carbon build-up, usually on the exhaust valve. Carbon gets so hot it will ignite fuel as you back off throttle. Try an additive that will eliminate the carbon build-up. Had good luck with a product called Valv-eze
from CENEX. Billy
