Just adding to ten-twenty's very good explanation.

Split pedestals didn't exist until 1950 on the letter series tractors. A majority of 50s 60s and 70s and everything beyond them have a split pedestal.

Accually the split pedistal came out on the late styled A"s and B"s and G"s in 1947. Seems like most were on the AW, AN, BW, BN, GW, and GN

According to Hobb's book they were offered on general purpose "A"s(ser. 648000), "B"s (ser. 259371) and "G"s in 1950. You are right that they were offered on the "_N"s and "_W"s earlier. I missed that.

John,

A "split pedestal" is a two-piece or convertible pedestal that allows one to interchange/bolt up front end assemblies-wide, narrow, or single. The top portion of the pedestal remains in place. In order to change front end assemblies on a one-piece front pedestal one must replace the entire pedestal
