Any suggestions on getting that big nut off on a dltx 51 carb? preferably w/o ruining carb like I did to the last one.Well I'm off to try not ruining a mag. Never done that before, should be exciting. Thanks, Mike

I just had one that needed to be repaired, We used the threaded portion of an old spark plug. It has the same threads and diameter as the carb casting had, 7/8's X 18 thread, Cut carb casting flat and cut plug off to the right height for the carb base and silver soldered it together-- Beautifull looking job-- I may need to bore the center out if I ever need to remove the brass orfice for some reason.

Mike, as you already know, that soft metal that nut screws onto wont take much torque. I guess you have already let the whole thing soak overnight in some sort of prnetrating oil with diesel or tranny fluid??? If you have done that I suggest you vice up the carb somehow then with a wrench on the big nut use a hammer to shock it loose by tapping as opposed to a dead pull. I would be afraid to impact wrench it much. If all else fails then I would resort to heating the big nut then lightly wrench tapping. I bet Roberts the carb people got some ideas also, but soaking and shocking and heat is all I know to try. Good luck. Ol John T in Indiana

While I won't reccomend this, it worked for me. Every time I walked by tractor for 2 days I sprayed it with wd40. Then I got my 1 1/2" socket and breaker bar and clamped them in a vise. I put the carb in and it came right off. I got lucky, but after all the stuff I broke on my 46 out of ignorance, this 48 has been a walk in the park so far.Still no fire in mag, if I get fuel system and carb straitened out today I migght borrow mag off 46 to fire it up and put in shed for winter. The mag on 48 runs off live hyd pump, different than 46. Well thanks for help and best wishes for a happy holiday season to all. Mike

Mike, from my past experience "Heat" is the best thing. I just use one of the small propane torch kits to heat the big nut. When it gets hot it will come off fairly easy. I've never had to use much force on one of those things. As you know the stem of that carb. is fragile. The heat also works very well to get all the little brass dead plugs out of the carb.

Be very careful those thrads are real fragile and will pop off and then you have got trouble .If it is an old teardown and has been a long time since it was off you may think about losing the nut to save the rest. a nut is cheaper just file or turn the head off till you see the theads and get it off that way ,works for me I learned the hard way .
