Anybody know if any parts are still made for this make of distributor? I called mother Deere and they said the coil still is and cost $170! Ballast resistor seems to be the other item of interest to me that I have not come up with a source for yet. I already found on the site a points/condensor set for around $25. Not much else to the darn thing. This came off a running tractor (ya, I know we all heard that before)and I did my best to "clean it up" inside & out and saw no problems anywhere. Reassembled and now does not work. Of coarse, stupid me did not test before I cleaned it. I am using a 6V battery and putting the dist. in a vise on a steel table for a ground. Hooked neg. battery wire to hot post on dist. and + wire to table for ground. Also made two makeshift plug wires, hooked to two new plugs, and grounded them to the table as well. Turned drive tee by hand and nothing. No sparky. Next I am going to try with cap off and move points with screwdriver and see what happens. Everything looks new inside. Might try condensor next.

Yep that's way too high for parts and coils about $55-60 and those are the Wico replacements. The original type longer K6977 condenser that used the wave type washer under it for grounding is no more unless you just find a NOS one. The new condenser supplied for XB dist. is shorter and same X6916 or 2-5007 condenser for the XHD & XVD magnetos that were .30-.34 mfd. (microfarad) rating and you just use a small coil spring under them for proper grounding in the XB. The XH mag condenser X5614 or 2-5077 that is in most aftermarket XH mag kits has lower rating of .16-.20 mfd and shouldn't be used in the XB dist. The XB dist. cap, dist. rotor, gaskets, and points set will be the same for the XH, XHD, XHE, XV, XVD magnetos. The XB was designed and made for 6V only and another one or several voltage step down reducers have to be used ahead of the resistor that is made in dist if trying to run it on 12V like was used on JD 50 tractors. Better and more reliable to stay with 6V on this XB dist if you can. Resistor wire is available to rebuild the internal resistor yourself. Some other XB parts like bushings, shaft, weights are available NOS but no longer produced new. Email me if you want a parts and service guide for the XB dist. and I'll shoot one to you. Depending on XB wear and parts needed or if shaft and weights are worn bad it is sometimes more feasible to go with a Delco dist or Wico magneto instead. Check your coil for continuity but it could still be bad and fail a firing load test on a coil tester breaking down inside windings. Depending on which one of 3 coils you have (X6872, X6872B or X8795) readings should be 6000-8500 ohms max for secondary points wire to output button and 2.0-3.6 ohms max for primary point wire to ground wire.

a1936Deere,
Yes, most parts are available - at least the "tune-up" type ones. Coils should be about $55 or less, and points/condenser kit is about $11, at least that is in the ballpark of what I get. The ballast resistor inside the unit doesn't fail often - the coil goes first if 12V are applied to the distributor.

First I would make sure the points are clean and shiny - I use strips of 320 grit aluminum oxide pulled between the points. Then, as Earl said, make sure the condenser is well grounded - the kits contain a shorter condenser with a spring washer to take up the length. Check the coil secondary resistance - from the HV button on the front of the coil to magneto ground - you should see around 8000 ohms. If these suggestions don't provide spark from your XB, post back and we'll try some other things.

When Glen in Tx or Duane gets here ask them about the condensor attachment cuz it may not be getting a good ground. Hes at [email protected]

Heres a Mag he refurbished for me

Make sure when you took it apart you didn't forget the wave spring under the condensor.I have several new XB units. Earl

Give Glen Schueler a call (806) 295-3682. He spends a lot of his time at the local fire house so if you don't reach him on first try, leave a message and/or call later.

He is worth the wait; good at what he does with engine ignition systems & won't leave missing and arm & a leg!
