I had the stick come out of my G, I replaced the ring that goes in the groove, It held for about a month an then came out again because the groove was worn, I put it back together again and this time I put a small tack on with my welder on the ring and it has been holding for the last year and a half. My wife tell me I am not normal sometime, so I think you can do the job..
Good Luck Ben

A normal person can probably it, then again, I think an abnormal person could fix it. Get a parts book, or at least the couple of pages that cover it. Your JD dealer will probably be able to shoot you some copies if you don't want to buy the whole book.

It may be as simple as the snap ring on the bottom has fallen off, allowing all of the stacked components to slide down, but that probably means that the groove it rides in is worn, along with some other parts. Probably not expensive, but a fair amount of work is involved just to get the shift quadrant off, but I think you can do the work.
