What exactly is corn head grease? Some sort of lightweight lubricating grease right? Is it petroleum based or vegetable based? Why is it called "corn head"? And what specific applications does it have and why is it used in those applications?

Messy stuff, lol. Seriously, like the others have said, it amounts to a flowable grease. Very light consistency at room temp and it will actually become pretty much a thick liquid as the temperature increases. It can be a bear to get a grease gun to pump it when it gets really hot out in the summer. Sometimes when you're trying to prime the gun by pushing on the plunger the grease will simply bypass around the plunger and make a real mess. But it is good stuff for what it's intended for and it's the only grease that should go in a row-unit gearbox. As far as that goes, Deere now specs it to replace conventional 80W-90 or 85W-140 in some other gearboxes, such as the walker gearcase on a conventional combine. Fill the case with grease and do away with the oil level sight hose.

Used in corn header gear boxes but there was also same type of grease call cotton picker grease for those gear boxes too and some others JD called Multi-Luber grease for the JD Multi-Luber pumps used on grain drills, combines and few other machines. Some independent oil jobbers local by you may have a similar grease that can be used in shredder gear boxes and other gear boxes or transmissions too. They just leak less and work well if not in too cold of a climate.

Similar to what used to be called hard oil.A flowable grease.

I don't know anything about cornheads, but I do recall when Deere Co. sent out bulletins years back - late 80s - that their cornhead grease was the new substitute for their "track and roller" grease. Still is - for those that have crawlers with grease fittings. It's supposed to be thick enough not to leak, but always soft enough to lubricate - even at very low temps.

It's a thin, sticky grease, almost certainly dino based, originally intended for lubing gearboxes on cornheads. It kind of flows a bit, like oil, rather than wadding up out of the way, like thicker grease does, which would leave the gears "high and dry".

Folks use it in the steering gearboxes of old tractors, 'cause it stays in the gear teeth, making for easier steering, yet doesn't drip quickly through old worn seals, like oil does.
