I have a model 40 combine that I am planning to restore. I have not had many luck finding any information conserning different options and configurations. I would like to know what year mine was produced serial #1119. It is a round back, 8ft platform, lights, and straw chopper. I work as a technician at a John Deere dealership so I have had good luck finding parts and service information but no history regarding the machine or production numbers. Any info would be appreciated. Thank you.

Was this the first self=propelled combine by John Deere. If so, what was the last tractor drawn model?

The 45 or 55 was first JD SP combines I believe coming out in 53 or 54 ? Not sure on the drawn type but thought it was covered in a recent issue of Two Cylinder.

Check archives on this forum and combine forum for more info. Some info was in Two Cylinder magazine and Green Magazine a while back too. 40 was made 1960-65, 8-10 ft. platform headers, 42 bushel grain bin, 20"x26" cylinder, HA115G gas engine was one option, a average blue weight 5300 lbs. Yes 1960 first year and 1961 began at #2551.

Deere let each dealer have on as a demonstrator in this area,I think.Everybody and his brother got to use the local one except me ,I think.Sure was a bit of marketing genius on their part.Local dealer was all of a sudden ,in the self propelled combine business.Had sold very few before the 40 demo, but interestingly enough the 45 and 55 easily outsold the 40.Then Deere came out with the 210 and 410 corn heads to replace the #10 corn head that wasn't much of a corn head.205 for the little 40 model.Life on the farm has never been the same since.
