A 1970 standard 4020 smokes when it starts cold. Could be a normal thing, but anything I should be aware of or look for as I consider buying this tractor? Thanks!!

I just bought a 66 4020 diesel and it smokes a littel white at start-up too (It's fuel). I workd as an Engine Engineer for John Deere Power Systems for the past 2 years, and white smoke at start-up in cold conditions is still an issue on tractors today. Now, they have cold advance on injection pumps, whihc helps. But on these old tractors, there is no such thing, so you juist have to live with it. It should clear up in about 3-4 minutes after startup. If it doesn't stop, then I'd say you have a pump or injector problem.

In 1969-70 John Deere wanted to stop us Mid-westerners from opeaning up the "smoke-screws" so they purchased the model "c" Roosa-master Injection Pumps. These Pumps were worthless as they were at capacity to pump enough fuel at rated Power. The result was a pump that dribbled fuel into the cyl's. after injection. this causes the engine to smoke when started up and to continue until warmed up. the cure for this is to install a Roosa-master model "Db" pump. also check to see if the injectors are good . They will go bad and cause fuel to dribble also. If this is a gas engine , check the acellerator pump diaphragm (potmetal carb.). they will get holes in them and let fuel into engine causing smoke.

If it's blue it's oil, Not normal. If it's white, it's water, again not normal. If it's black it's fuel, and could mean its alittle rich, or if it's a gas tractor, it might mean the choke was on alittle long during the starting process. I keep my 4020 gas alittle rich, and it will always puff alittle black smoke as it starts up in cold weather. Is this realy a 4020 standard{non row crop} you are looking at? Arn't they a little rare? not to be nosey, but how much are they wanting for a 4020 Standard? Please let us know. Thanks, Greg H.

Well, I may have my terms wrong here when I referred to "standard". This machine I'm considering is a 1970 4020 with hydraulics on the fender. Dual hydraulics. 90% rubber and 300 pounds of weights. 4300 hours seems to be accurate. A dealer wants 12k for it. Has a loader but he will take it off. Previous owner had it 8 years for utility work; no field work. So I may have used the term "standard" inappropriately.

If it's diesel, white smoke cold is normal. It is unburned fuel. You can tell real quick by smelling it. Diesel fuel and/or antifreeze have real distinctive smells. White smoke on a diesel is not advantageous, but with the old pump technology in 1970, it's probably the best you can expect. It means that not enough heat is being generated by compression to burn all the fuel that is available. May or may not indicate poor rings or valves.

gas or diesel?

My '68 gas smoked like an IH diesel until I fixed a few things, like plug wires, plugs, timing, choke wire, float needle and seat which lowered the fuel level a bit.
