I was out working with the 4020 pulling some logs on saturday, when I needed alittle extra power, so I grabbed the throttle. Once the RPM's went above 2000, there was an awful screeching sound , and the needle on the Tachometer barried itself against the right side, and broke . The screeching continued for a few seconds, and quit. During this time the moter maintained the same rpm, and wasn't tacked out. What I wanted to know is should I just try to replace the needle, or possibley replace the whole tack. { How complicated is this?} What is left of the tack seems to still be working, and the hour meter for all intesive perposes still works also. Let me know what you think, thanks Greg H.

The speedometer in my '54 ford did that the winter of '63. But it didn't break the needle. What I found was that the needle was on a bearing that had the input shaft in it and that bearing had run dry and seized (hence the screech and needle pegging). A speedometer/tach shop ought to be able to repair it. It will take cleaning up that bearing and getting it lubricated again.

I've heard that 4020 tachometers have a propensity to fail. I'd just as soon not see it happen to mine.

Used tachs can be found for $50. You can remove the bezel once the tach is out of the instrument panel, and then the glass, and then try to get the range changing assembly loose so the rear screws can be removed so that the guts will fall out in your hand. But I have peered into several of these, and found that the pot metal mounts, bearings, dial face, and needle are so deteriorated (usually just one or two problems each), that I end up junking the thing and buying a working tach. I don't think you can get out of a rebuild shop as fast and cheaply as finding good used.
