51 B Sediment Bowl

Hello,

Started to look at a 51 B we bought a couple weeks ago. There was no sediment bowl under
the tank, just a shutoff. Took off the old carb
and installed a new sediment bowl. When I went
to install a rebuilt carb it wouldn't fit. I
mean the carb fit o.k. but the air cleaner
elbow hits the bottom of the sediment bowl.
This is same size bowl that's on my 44 B, but
looks like the 51 needs a shorter one. My
manual is not real clear on this. Thanks for
your help. CalJim

Hello All,

Thanks for your replies. After some more invest-
igating It seems the front of the tank had settled down. Raised up about 3/8",just enough
room. I did have an original design bowl, I
think I tossed out the last offset one last
summer. Glad they started making exact repro-ductions. Thanks again CalJim

Here is what I have run into in this situation, the original John Deere sediment bowl assembly has the threaded stub that screws into the tank in the exact center of the assembly. Many of the replacements have this pipe stub offset by maybe half an inch. When screwing it into the tank you'll notice it orbits rather than just rotates. There are correct reproductions available that may cure your problem. It is easy to miss this difference until the critical moment (now).

The large bowl should fit no problem, something isn't right ? Check to see if the rubber cushions and spacers are under the rear tank bracket where it attaches to the rad. upper tube above eng. block and also up front on top of the rad. tank. These are at least 1/2" thick.

My '50 "B" has but 1/4 inch clearance underneath between it and the tube , and I believe it is original stuff. With that close clearance, could be a couple things causing yours to hit. The fact that someone else took it off means they probably created the problem. Does it have an aftermarket intake manifold? Molded a little "thick" would cause the carb/tube to be too high. If it has a John Deere intake manifold AND DLTX 67 carb then it should have clearance. Check them. If it does then the sediment bulb assy. or fitting in the tank may be wrong replacements. Check tank mounting to make sure it is up where it belongs. Like I said, there's not much room to play with anyway. Everything's got to be in it's place. Good luck, let us know what you find.
