4010D Timing

Howdy my peeps! I recently completed a total overhaul of a 1961 4010D. Total rebuild kit (sleeves, pistons, etc, etc) along with a new cam, rebuilt head, etc. Lots of dough in this baby. Also had the Roosa pump professionally rebuilt and injectors redone.

Anyway.....according to the tech manual, timing should be set at 14 degrees. However, I can not get my pump to turn that far. The lines match at approximately 8 or 9 degrees. Can not turn the pump any more.

Thoughts? Is this going to be okay or did I royally screw something up?

Thanks!

Your 4010 could have one of the non original pumps. We need to know what the part number is of your pump(its on the plate on the side of the pump). My 61 4010 had one of these and the correct timeing was at 8 degrees. MSB helped me get the correct timing on mine (BTW thanks msb!).

John

As I already posted - it's not usually a big difference in the pump design - it's where the timing mark is etched. When the metal part is new that holds the mark - it comes out of the box blank. It's up to the guy who is working on the pump to decide where the timing mark gets put. On older and original pumps - it gets put on to show 123.5 degrees whereas later pumps. e.g. those used on 4020s get marked at 127 degrees. When an injection pump gets repaired - if the marks are changed - the number tag should be modified to show it - but that is not always done. When in doubt - there is an easy way to check it without taking the pump off or apart.

 123.5 or 127 degrees? in reply to 61-4010, 11-11-2006 19:45:17
If you can't get the static timing where you want it - at 14 degrees BTDC - then your engine oil-pump is out of time. The fuel-injection drive slot in the engine oil pump should be 15 degree from parallel with the crankshaft with the V mark towards the block with #1 at TDC of its compression stroke.

You also ought to make sure your fuel injection pump is the orignal and not a later or older and altered 4020 style pump that gets timed differently (TDC instead of 14 before TDC). The original 4010 pump should be a DBGVC631-4F, 11AF, or a 1AJ with the timing marked that is etched on the pump at 123.5 degrees. A 4020 pump would be a 633 of some sort - CBC, JDB, or DB and the timing marked is etched at 127 degrees.

Thanks for the details. The Roosa appears to be an original based upon the plate. So it appears that I'm not at 15 degrees. I made a host of changes in this machine....new cam came with the "finer" teeth gear so I had to change the gear on the oil pump and the tach. I suspect that I'm one tooth off.

Thanks for the info! I'll give this a whirl.
