Correct Wire Size for 12V System

My recently purchased 1956 420U has been converted to a 12V electrical system. I'm uncertain the correct wiring was used in all the applications.

What gauge wire should be used for the headlights, tail light, ammeter and dashlight, ignition, etc. in a 12 volt system?

Wire size depends on the current, not the voltage. The wire sizes used for 6 volts work superbly for the same power loads at 12 volts. The factory 12 volt wiring would be smaller to save on the cost of copper. That removes most of the advantage of 12 volt conversions.

The ammeter wire size depends on the generator or alternator capacity, but it ouught to be 10 or 8 gauge. Most lights and ignition (except for aircraft landing lights and other such super bright lights) can get by pretty good on 14 gauge. Often the length of the run demands a larger size to limit voltage drop, not to limit the wire heating. The only time a wire is too fat is if it won't fit the connections at the ends.

Heavy enough that should there be an electrical failure and or short. The fuse will blow before the wire(s)smoke. 14 gauge extra flex and a 20 amp slow blow (type D) fuse should work ok.
