Removing Battery Tray on 420U

The battery tray on my 1956 420U is rusting away and needs to be replaced.

I must remove four very rusted 1/4"X 3/4" cap screws in order to replace the tray.

I have been soaking them in penetrating fluid.

Quarter inch cap screws do not have much girth/body and I don't want to twist them off.

Heat may be the answer but the gas tank above is still in place.

Suggestions????

Smack the heads of the bolts as hard with a BFH this gets their attention ! Then try loosening them and see if they move. They might not be too bad as they go into a sealed up hole.

if it doesn't work as described below, not that hard to remove gas tank then you can get at the bolts to drill and tap

see of you can get the tray out from under the bolts. You could cut with chisel, work out piece. Then get a good pair of vise grips. Secure and barely move back and forth, like slightly tapping. You would get the bolt to turn. Remember back and forth slightly.
