I know what it means (or best offer) but what is the real purpose behind that phrase? Does it just help the seller find where a too-high-of price should be or what? Any other philosophies or reasons connected to this?

I agree with B-maniac. Find out as much as you can. Figure a price your comfortable with, and stick with it! Same way at an auction sale. Stick with your figure. Either you get it, or walk, and don't look back.

I think some people put an outrageous price with OBO to find out the actual worth of an item.

When I'm willing to waste some time, I'll offer an OBO seller asbout half what his sign says. then when he says NO, I ask him if he's has a better offer than mine. When he says no, I ask him to sell it to me, since mine is the best offer he's had.

We glare at each other for a minute or so, and then i walk off.

I was selling a car once and had the price and OBO on it. The guy gave me $200 over the price I wanted. I didn't argue with him.

I"m also not so sure this isn"t happening a lot on the ebay auctions as people are always putting item for sale locally. They don"t put a buy it now and if you bid in, all they have to do if they don"t want to sell is that they sold locally and how would you ever know. There can be a lot of monkeying around with all type of sales both on the buyer and seller side.

This is a very good post and I also would like to know what it means. I"ve bought an sold many items but do not use the phrase. Sometime ago I went to see about a vehicle and the party let me drive it and I started discussing or negotiating to buy. He took my offer and wrote it down then advised he would let me know if I had the best offer. I was also pissed and told him he could forget that ideal as he was running a oneside undisclosed bidding auction. He even called a couple of days later and said car was mine and I told him to stuff it where the sun didn"t shine. What a waist of time. I still don"t like the phrase used in adds due to this experience.

I use it in my ads in hope to at least get some offers lower than my ASKING price. Still doesn't help people don't seem to want to make offers. Something is only really worth what someone will give you and you have to start somewhere.

I ran into a fellow once that had an OBO on his ad. I showed up to buy it at the full stated amount. Well it turns out he wanted best offer over this ? I call that an auction ! And was very pissed I was not of informed of this when I talked to him and set up a time to go all the way up there to look at it. I played his game a little bit and helped him get more out of it from someone else.

I always figured it just meant that the price was negosciable as apposed to firm, but in the last few years,I've seen it used as nothing but a manipulative sales tool by the unscrupulous seller. Just tell them what you are willing to pay , get a yes or no right then and walk. That's the way you should buy no matter how they word their add.
