I repowered my "68 4020 with a 404 from a 7700 combine. I got the engine at Spallinger Combine in Bluffton, Ohio for $2200 with exchange. The engine had around 2000-3000 hours on it. There was another 7700 engine and 105 combine engine that were both 404. You might also try checking tractor salvage yards but you can count on rebuilding the engine. There were a few modifications we had to make but nothing serious. Only reason I did a whole engine was because before I inherited the tractor with holes in the side of the block from a thrown rod. I would suggest rebuilding what you have. Hope this helps. JaredM

A guy in our area put I think it was 8.3 liter powertech engine. Whatever the heck those newer engines they put in the big Deeres. He could pull it in road gear. It was quite a show.

Easiest by far is going to be installing a Deere engine, bet it a 404 from the 4020 era, a 30-series 404 or even a 466. A B-series Cummins is a possibility, but it's not going to be easy or cheap, you'll be giving up 44 cubic inches, and will likely destroy much of the value of what's becoming a very collectible tractor. What's wrong with the original engine that you're thinking repower? Unless you're talking about making big horsepower, which the rest of the tractor probably won't like, there's nothing wrong with a 4020 404 if it's in good working order, so what's your plan?

The original engine destroyed itself and well, just kind of imploded. I think the way, i"m going is to get an engine from a combine and modify what i have to. I hate running a tractor with cab while i"m cutting hay. That 4020 was the easiest machine to use for a number of operations i do.

If you were going to go the 404 route, why not go ahead and do a 466? I would think they are more plentiful than the 404.

The 4430 version of the 404 could be a good idea. I have a 4320 that has and original non overhauled engine and gave a little thought to a complete bolt together engine change rather that rebuilding the present 404. I"ll watch your replies.

Hello! Are you looking to repower with another Deere engine, or something else? If your answer is "something else", I have some experience at that (i.e. Cummins). The 4020 is a good tractor (most folks say "great tractor"). It deserves a good ("great") engine, be it Deere or "something else". Best wishes!
Merlin

I have seen a really clean install of a 4430 404. The hood required some surgery but other than the bubble in the hood and turbo whistle you wouldn't know it didn't come that way.
