Guys my newest John Deere acquisition is probably the oldest I will find it is a horse drawn sleigh manufactured, according to the data plate, by Deere & Webber Co of Minneapolis.

Can anybody provide a picture of the sleigh in original condition? I would appreciate hearing from JD historians or anybody that knows what it should have for colors and details.

The sleigh is a Portland style and has elliptical side springs. It also has fittings that allow the shafts to be attached in two position one aligned with the center line of the sleigh and another position approximately 10 offset to one side. Can you tell my why this second position would be used? The sleigh has a series of small wooden plugs visible down the center line in the rear and is adorned with white and gold (?) pinstriping with fancy details at the corners. A brass oval name plate with starburst pattern is on the rear and matching stencils or decals were applied on the sides (readable with a magnifier).

Seat back and sides are in plush green (numerous holes). No seat bottom included.

Wood dash is broken and rough. Side panels are delaminating. Undercarriage is in rather good condition no known cracks in the runners although one diagonal brace is missing.

Does anybody have suggestions for restoration? I am troubled by the prospect of replacing wood and losing the fine pinstriping and stenciled labels. Who can prepare modern decals from a good photo or other artwork?

What would be the value in present condition and if restored? When were these sleighs manufactured?

Thanks for helping. Replies welcome at [email protected].

Dave

Dave,
There was a 60 page booklet published for the centennial of the Minneapolis branch house known as Deere & Webber. On page 27 of that booklet is shown a page from a 1912 Furrow magazine which describes "Bob Sleds and Cutters for All Purposes", including "Portland Cutters, Many styles. Well finished and ironed. Substantial and stylish." There is not a pix of the cutter.

You might try contacting Henry Lindeman - he could likely point you in a good direction for more info. Contact me off-line at [email protected] if you want his email address.

i wouldn't even think about restoring it. it will lose all value if you do. what did you intend to do with it? jd might want to buy it from you to put on display. i would feel good about donating it to a farm museum or at least loan it to them so more people could enjoy it.
