4430 water in tank and hard to start when cold

Last night I tried to start my 4430 and it stared and ran for about three minutes and died. It would not start up again. I drain the water that I found in the tank from the hose from the tank to the fuel pump. I got all the water out of it and it still would not start. It is a 2-6volt system, I tried jumping it off with my truck (positive to the cylinoid and negative to the frame). This did not work either. Any helpful suggestion would be welcomed, Thanks.

I imagine that your fuel filter is plugged. Years ago when I was a John Deere parts manager the folks at parts school told us that a glass fuel filter would completely stop flowing fuel with a tablespoon of water in it. Odds are you have that much if you know for sure you have had water in your fuel tank. I would buy a double change of filters because one set likely won"t get all the water out. Drain the fuel out you have and put in fresh and be prepared to change the filters once more. That should go toward eliminating the water in your fuel. Mike

when my ih runs out of fuel (dummy me) i have to crack open the injector lines at the injectors themselves to let all the air out. the same thing with water here. you need to find the source that is putting that much water in the tank to start with. adding diesel fuel conditioner to the tank will help disipate the water too. don't use more than the recommended amount. to much washes the oil film off the cylinder walls.

JD recommended after killing engine while warm to push throttle full forward then return it to idle position. This helps rack in inj. pump to advance to start postion. If your pump has the mechanical aneroid it also helps to manually trip it. Tx Jim

You will need to change fuel filter(s) if much water got in them as water stops fuel from passing through filter. You will then need to bleed up to at least inj.pump. There should be a drain on bottom of tank to let water out as fuel suction in bottom of tank is a few inches off bottom. Tx Jim
