One more question. I hear a 4240 isn"t great on fuel, just wondering, under light loads, like baling, going down the road, etc. how the two compare on fuel consumption. Also possibly a loader in the future. Also if possible an estimation of gallons per hour under light conditions. I found a 4440 with 54xx hours that is priced not much more than a 4240 with 74xx hours. Both are quads, and the 4440 looks like it was taken care of a little better. The 4240 is a "78, the 4440 "79. Thanks.

For accurate fuel economy figures, look at the Nebraska test lab. Asking Bubba for his "seat of the pants dyno" results has some accuracy problems.

I guess I must be different than other people. I have a few tractors, and I use a few thousand dollars worth of fuel each year. I know very close how many gallons per hour each tractor uses doing different things.

Neighbor has a 4240 and a 4020 (early one). He complains that the 4240 is much harder on fuel than 4020 and doe not get much more work done. we have 4430 & 4440. Sorry to say we prefer the 4430 and have more hours on it with many less problems.

4440 is turbo charged, normally if you were working both tractors hard I would think the 4440 would get more work done on the same amount of fuel. They have the same engine, turbo usually helps fuel economy. I used to have a 4440, one of Deere's better tractors. For light duty maybe the 4440 would use a little more but I doubt it would be much difference. If it is a lower hour, cleaner tractor I would get it. You will find very few people bad mouth a 4440.

I know a couple of farmers that have 4430 and they both claim they start like a mule when it's cold.

How about those compared to a later model 4430? They aren't much cheaper but I have seen a few around.

4440is a fuel hog. If you don't need bigger horsepower 4240 better hay/loader tractor.
Had 4230 excellent hay/loader tractor[stolen].
No figures on fuel consumption.4440 burns more fuel in hay field than 4250.Would like to have 4240 myself.Good luck.

Thanks for info, I"d like to find something smaller with that many hours, they just aren"t around, if they would be, they would cost the same as the 4440. The 4240 I mentioned looks ok, just that many more hours and doesn"t cost much less.
