Hi,
I found a JD E engine with serial number 234xxx and the serial number lists start with 235520. Tag is in the back and is a very large brass one. Any one else own an engine this early or have info on this one.
Thanks.

7810,
It is my understanding that Deere built about 400 "pre-production" engines before the s/n listing started. Several variations of these have been identified - Larry Falk was the guru of those engines and after his passing his son Rie may be the person to check for details. I believe he lives near Columbia City, IN.

I have one with a brass tag on the back of the base, no timing info cast in the crank wheel, a muffler with a 1" pipe thread, and generally rough casting. Other versions include the "high base" (which has a taller base).

You might also check www.smokstak.com which is the popular site for engine collectors.

Hi Duane,
Thanks for the response. Does your cylinder head also have a different casting number on it? Engine came with a slightly different appearing head with a three digit E part number instead of the ones I have seen with a two digit(E--R)part number.

Yes, the head on my engine has a 3 digit casting number - it has two strengthing ribs near the top whereas the production ones have one rib.
