Ok, started the process of restoring my 44 b last night. Got all the screws that hold the tin loose. I just want to make sure i do this right. to remove the hood, what is the best way to remove the steering shaft. take off the steering wheel and go forward through the steering box, or worm gear and go back, or is there another way. Thanks in advance to you guys who have done this before. hopefully will spare me some choice words and fits.

What is not wise is to tackle a tractor without the manuals for it! Your questions tend to indicate you do not have them. With your tractor's serial number handy, call (800) 522-7448 and buy the Operator's Manual and Parts Catalog for your JD-B. (Do not let anyone tell you that SM2000 is a service manual for your tractor). See the JD-H Restoration Site for more data on this one. Then fetch the "JD-4" I&T Shop Service Manual which you may find at your local JD Ag dealer, or -- it is widely available on eBay. (PatB)

Pat,

Am I wrong, or is SM-2004 not the correct Service Manual for the Model B tractors from 96000 and up?

Stan -- you are 100% correct in the notion that SM2004 is prepared for B-96000-up. It is a pricey book -- and unless a fellow is really serious about a total restoration, he may not be that needy. (PatB)

Pat,

The Service Manual may have gone up since I bought mine back in '92 for $36.00...still a good investment for me, as the I & T manual seemed to be written for a more accomplished mechanic than I.

Stan -- If you want a hard copy of SM 2004 today, bring with you a $100 bill. You won't even have any left over for a cup of coffee! Reference is the JD Parts Page. (PatB)

That sort of makes all of the books you now have in your library a little more precious!

Folks on the Johnny Popper Forum are crying the blues about the bottom having fallen out of the antique tractor market. Well, those who sell parts, service and books haven't got the word! As a matter of fact, the cost of parts make my book all the more valuable because it's main thrust is to help the reader avoid making costly mistakes in acquiring parts and services. More later (PatB)

P. Browning - I have the manuals. I just wanted to ask and make sure that I was doing it correctly. Just wanted to ask a question from some people who have more experience at this. make sure that this is the "right" way. Or if there is an easier or better way. The learning experience is either learn from your own mistakes and do it better next time, or ask questions and learn from other peoples mistakes. I appreciate the help guys. Sure this will not be the last of the questions.

Aggijon -- I am pleased as punch to hear you have the manuals. The point you make about making some of the same mistakes many of us have made is also taken well. This is precisely why I prepared the book, John Deere Model "H" Restoration Guide because in that book you will find a minimum of 30 cost-saving tips -- applicable to your JD-B as well as to a JD-H tractor.. There is no need for a first-timer to have to pay the price or experience the pain -- thus my book will soon pay for itself -- it's guaranteed. (PatB)

John Deere never intended the hood of these tractors to be removed 62 years later did they. Thanks guys.

Worm gear is part of the shaft, so all you can do is take it out the front. Hope you didn't park it with the front of the tractor close to the shop wall..... ...
