I've got a 46 G that I want to paint, never done it before. Is steam cleaning and then air spraying w/JD green on the tractor acceptable? Or do I have to sand and prime? Someone else is gonna straighten out tinwork and spray for me. This not gonna be a showpiece, but I would like it to look nice and more importantly LAST. Also I have a 48 G that is real nice. That one,(next project)I would like to look real nice. Any difference in paint jobs/prep? Also , where do you get good decals? Thanks and Happy Holidays to all! Mike

Mike, I'll have to agree with Mark on the decals. The only ones I know of that look like the originals are from Travis Jorde. The decals you get from the dealer or other places for $20-$30 aren't right. They have the clear tape between the letters and just don't do justice to a fresh paint job.
As for the paint job, if your just wanting a nice look to use around the farm I'd sand the sheet metal lightly, degrease (Oven cleaner works well), and fix oil leaks and use primer sealer and spray JD green. If you want a show shine, I'd sand her all the way down and use a good quality paint such as DuPont and do Base Coat Clear Coat, and top it off with a set of Jordes decals.
Hope this helps a little, It's been my experience that your better off not to go cheap on the paint or decals, because it'll just start looking old again much quicker and all your work is lost.

decals are best obtained from Jorde Decals, or from K&K Antique Tractor Parts.
