Took the oil filter housing off last night, and blew all of the holes out. Then I took the oil pan off and the screen to the oil pump...Had the wife crank it over....no suction from the pipe that sticks down from the pump....tonight, I'll take the cover off of the pump, and make sure that I don't have a sheared key, or something...Does any one have a manual for a model 40 , section 100 posted on-line anywhere? I sure could use a manual right about now....The 420 manual says to look at the model 40...

An interesting story. Since you have the oil pan off I think I would proceede with pulling the poil pump and checking it out on the bench.

At this point I would be stumped also, but if the oil pump is turnign and working some it should be at least pushing pil up to the guage hole in the filter housing.

If you jerk the pump out let us know what you find. That maneuver won't cost you a dime.

As mentioned in another post, those studs that hold the head on, one of them has a flat side on it. This stud allows oil to the rockers and must be installed in the rear position of the engine.

I know what you are going thru on that manual issue.

My greasy service manual is out in the barn so maybe I am wring there. As i foggily recall you can take the two bolts/studa out that hold the pump in place and it will just drop out. Wouldn't it be easier to do it that way and then just throw it up on the bench and check it out?

If yu do that you will have to time the thing when putting back in, and above all take the distributor out before reinstalling the oil pump.

There have been a few folks on the board that were more than willing to help me thru the refering to the 40 manual deal.

Some history would still be helpful.

Was it running when you took it apart

Did it have oil pressure then

did you have the cam out

did you put new cam bearings in

Later and let us know - I wuld think something has got to turn up when you drop that pump. Surely there is enough room for it to clear the crank and drop out.

Here's the story on the 420...I bought this a couple of months ago for short money....Been sitting out in the woods for 2, or 3 years w/out a head on it.I had to beat the pistons out of it w/ a wododen block, and got it freed up. I bought a head, and had it machined W/ new valves, springs, keepers, ect...Put the head on and I only had 50 psi of compression in the front jug...Back jug has 150 psi...Noticed at that time that I had "intermitant" oil presure. I have not had the crank, or cam shaft out of it. I had the one bad cyl boared .040 over, and put in a .040 over piston in it....It now has 150 psi compression in both cyl, so that problem is fixed, only to come up with this no oil presure problem...Hope this makes sence to everyone....Thanks in advance
