In the quest for another general utility tractor I was told to consider the 4230. I have a 4020D and have some perspective on the 4320 as the next larger version. Where does the 4230 fit in, and how have they performed over time? I'd like 100hp so wonder where they stack up on that basis. Thanks much!

I like the 4230 for most things they have the same 404 as you 4020 and are right around 100 hp. The one we have on the farm feels alittle top heavy when using it for brush hogging with the 10 ft. pull behind. As far as making hay, feeding, with a mixer wagon, hauling in silage, or other work it seems to be a very good tractor. Some say the quad range transmission is weak, but the one on the farm has about 9000 hours and is still going strong. It is used on my father in-laws farm as a gerneral utility type tractor. I don't know how they plow because he uses bigger stuff, but I consider the 4230 as a less pretty 4020 with a handier transmission set up. by the way the top heavy feel I mentioned above, may be caused by the 20.5 X 38 rears. Good Luck in finding a nice tractor. Greg H.

Depends on what you want. If you just want a better cab & trans., a 4230 will be OK. If you want more power, you would be better off to get a 4430. A good 4020 will pull right with most 4230's, which is why so many 42's were turbo'd.

We've had one for about 9 years. It's a '73 model with cab, hasn't given too much trouble. Put new injectors in it about 6 weeks ago, has probably 6000 hrs. on it and has never been overhauled as far as I know. We did put in a new camshaft about 2 years ago because our mechanic put a dial indicator on it and it said to replace it. From what I know, the early 30 series tractors had a problem with a soft cam which wore more than they should have. The oil pump drive gear on the cam would wear thin, strip, then the oil pump locked up, then the engine locked. Enough rambling, but if it is pre '75 model I'd check the cam.
