Big nut 51 carb, brass fuel stem to the float bowl has been brazed in (poorly) and is leaking bad. I was wondering if a product such as JB weld would work to stop the leak? Also how tight do I dare go with the bowl nut in order to get the bowl gasket to seal? Thanks in advance!

The part that has been brazed to the float bowl body is the brass fitting that screws into the body that the fuel line attaches to! Sorry for not making that clear!

This is not a repair to fool with if you are not absolutely sure of what you are doing. If that stem breaks you are going to have a lot of gas being blown back on a hot engine by the fan, and likely a big nasty fire. Get it done right, it must be strong. There are other good carbs shops that can do it, but I have heard a lot of bad things about Denny's in Fletcher, OH. Try Robert Beaver. Good Luck,
Paul

KJF470,I would guess your carb is leaking at the bowl nut gasket. If your bowl to carb body gasket is leaking your fuel level is too high.I have had several carb in for repair that the thread is welded on crooked. I have been able to figure out which way it is out of alignment and recut the bowl to match the crooked stem. When I repair the stem I always use a brass pilot where the nozzle goes .That keeps everything straight. Then tack weld it, remove pilot and finish your weld .It works good for me. Earl In Illinois

This has had a brass stem brazed directly to the cast iron and is leaking around their brazing! The tag I removed from the carb said "DENNY'S", whoever that is! Was wondering if I could apply a coating of JB Weld over the brazing job to seal the leak! I have no access to an acytelene/oxygen setup. You are correct Sir, I had to replace the nut to bowl gasket (cut the 1st one) and the bowl to body gasket is leaking! The tractor would not even pull itself in road gear due to all kinds of rust/gunk just in the float bowl. I ordered a kit from Robert's and the required drills from MSC to clean the passages. Put the carb on and initial setting were idle 1&1/2 turns out, load 3/4 turn out. The tractor will now pull itself in road gear but when I throttle it up driving down the driveway it gives me some black smoke out the exhaust. So I need to first get my leaks fixed then try to set the idle and load. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I guess I don't understand how leaking at the braze should leak to the outside as the nut seals against the bowl. If it is crooked I can see that will make the gasket not seal and sometimes finding an o-ring to fit there will seal them up.

If it is porousity in the braze then JB Weld should seal up the pin holes.
