I am having problems with my oil pressure and now temp gauges on my 4440. When running the oil pres. will peg the needle all the time. When you turn the key off it will drop back about a quarter of an inch but never go back all the way to the left. If you unhook the wire from the sender it makes no difference if the wire is hanging or if you ground it. Is the gauge bad? JD doesn"t give those away and I don"t want to guess. Second I had the hood off for a different problem and a hose clamp fell against the temp sending unit. I started the tractor and the temp gauge fluttered for about 10 seconds then fell all the way to the left. Now it won"t do anything. I found the hose clamp AFTER this happened so I think I might had shorted something. NO difference with the wire off or on the sending unit or if you ground it. Any thoughts out there what"s going on here?

On the temp guage, I would suspect that you either fried it or the wire running between the guage and the sender. The oil pressure guage, it sounds like the guage is possibly bad. Take apart the dash and inspect the wiring/dash assembly as best as you can, try new guages if you see no other obvious problem. I"ve seen quite a few bad guages on these tractors. Wiring is probably the second most common problem, and senders for the two guages mention are probably the least common problem. I can only think of one temp sender that I found to be bad.

On the temp seding unit is thertwo wires if there is you probably shorted it out. and for the oil pressure guage I would say try a new one. Or maybe get one from a auto parts store that would fit. Possibly make it a manual guage.

The temp sender would only have ONE wire, and grounding it would simply make the gauge move to "HOT".

He may have a bad sender.

As to the oil gauge, the sender may be bad, the gauge may be bad, or there may be a wiring problem, possibly a GROUND problem in the instrument cluster itself. That could be affecting the TEMP gauge, too.

A genuine Deere shop manual will give complete troubleshooting information.

I would STRONGLY advise against messing with changing it to a mechanical gauge!!!!

Too often, the little line breaks or gets a hole worn in it, causing loss of engine oil, or a FIRE, if the oil sprays ont hot exhaust components.
