John
using the part number that was listed in a reply, I ran it thru the Depot and they have 2 of them you have to be a dealer to get parts from them, but usually the prices arn't that bad.

I don't know if you can still buy a new bar but I do know that some were interchangeable. I could and did swap bars between a #5 and a #10. Just gotta check with Deere I guess. I don't know what you have against a used one, they don't wear much. All the wear is on the guards and hold down clips.

The wear will be on the wearing plates, guards and hold down clips ONLY if those parts are changed properly when they get worn. I saw a number 5 on an auction that probably had never had any wearing plates replaced, they were mostly worn completely away and the main bar had been taking a beating of wear for a long time.

Thanks for replying. Mine got bent once many years ago. We had it streightened in a press and it is pretty good. I am sure that all used ones are at least bent some so I was wondering if a new part was available. Thanks.

My book shows part # Z6439H for the 7' bar.

JDPARTS shows that as in invalid #. It's POSSIBLE dealer would have a newer #, or a subbed part #.

Just to warn you, though, cutterbars that ARE available for newer mowers run $700 to $900.

(YES, that's right, for the simple CUTTERBAR the guards bolt to!)

John, Ive owned several of them old No. 5's, still have 2 somewhere, and what I liked was you could still buy either Mother Deere or Generic knives n sections n ledger plates n wear plates n pitman arms n hold down clips etc etc at Deere or Tractor Supply or Rural King or Central Tractor. So YESSSSS S you can get a new knife etc most anywhere
