JD400 backhoe stalls under load

I"m stumped and am hoping someone out there can help. I have a 1972 JD 400 with a model 9400 backhoe (2020 gas engine, marvel-schebler updraft carburator) which a few days ago stopped running well. The only thing I can think of is that I added some fuel system cleaner to a full tank of gas on the day it started acting up, and I had also had the fuel shut off valve closed overnight as I noticed it would flood overnight into the air intake hose. I had hoped the cleaner would clean the carburator float valve which I thought was causing the gas leaking out of the carb. Note that even after adding the fuel cleaner that the backhoe still started and ran well for at least a few hours. I now find that I will stall it whenever I pull up the hyrdaulic selector valve as I normally would to use the backhoe. I can still use the backhoe with the selector valve pushed down, but I need to revv up the engine pretty high (2000+ rpm) and the throttle lock lever now automatically slips down to a lower rpm as soon as I put any kind of a load on it. At this point as soon as I start to lift the boom, or pull in the bucket arm with a load it starts to stall the engine. It seems to get worse the longer I drive it. The other day when it got to the point of not being very useful for backhoing on my farm I had a hard time even driving it back to the house without it wanting to stall (even had to put it in first). I can start it up easily anytime (hot of cold). When its cool I can start and drive it at least an hour or two okay, but it still starts to stall the engine if I use any (loader or backhoe) of the hydraulics under load without first really revving up the engine (2000+ rpm). Before this problem started this week I used to be able to pull up the selector valve to use the backhoe and with the engine revved between 1200 - 1500 rpm using the throttle lock I would have plenty of power on the backhoe or loader without ever coming close to stalling.

Thinking it was a hydraulic problem, I just changed both the transmission and loader hydraulic filters and also cleaned the hydraulic intake screen. I replaced all the fluid with new JD 303 compatible stuff even though the old stuff looked okay to me. No difference. Problem is still there.

One other thing I have observed is that the exhaust fumes have recently been very strong smelling to the point they can almost make you cry like you would if you stood to close to an old diesel exhaust. Probably the fuel system cleaner I added. Also the engine exhaust smokes more now under load. I"ve run through 1/2 tank of gas since the problem first started. All fluid levels and the engine temperature is still good. Oil, oil filter, rad fluid and air filter were all changed no more the 100 hours ago.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

John

Sounds as if you stirred up some old junk in the fuel system..I would steam out the fuel tank and rebuild the carb..I would also install an inline fuel filter just to be safe..
