I have 39 JD A. I have no oil going to the rocker shaft. I have oil preassure on the gauge, I removed the oil line going to the gauge and the oil squirts out, turning it by hand. The crank and clutch bearings are getting oil, I can see the oil running out of these areas when hand turning the engine. The pump works, any ideas of what could be stopping the oil from going to the rocker feed tube.

Well, I'll start with the obvious. Is the pipe from the pump to the block installed? If you remove the oiler "T" pipe, and blow a bit of air in there, where does it gurgle? Do you have the oil outlet washer groove clear? Most I've found problems with had either the washer fouled with a gasket that wasn't required, or a pipe that was not hooked into the block or to the pump supply line. It's about as straight a run as you can get.

Thanks Frank for the info. My tractor has 4 oil lines comming from the oil pump. One to the clutch side of the crank, one to the flywheel side of the crank, one to the oil filter, and one to the top of the block at the governor. The oil line to the governor also feeds the oil pressure gauge, which has oil comming to it. The oil is not getting through the governor to the tube that feeds the rockers. I did not see a T. Unless it is in the governor. When I blew air into the oil outlet that feeds the tube to the rockers I could hear air comming into the crankcase next to the gear on the right side of the governor connecting to the flywheel side of the crankshaft.

I really messed it up by referencing the newer style oil line set up that was not part of a '39.

Ok. Did you have the governor off? Could you have a gasket blocking off a port? Doesn't look like this from the parts book. I'm reaching here because I simply am not familiar with the plumbing. It's been years since I had an older "A" apart. If it is passing air to the crankcase, it seems that part of the line is clear.

So maybe blow air down the oil gauge line and listen to see where that escapes. Can you see where the tappet oiler line connects in the crankcase? The book shows a nut type bushing and packing gland.

Does that tube run on the outside of the engine from the governor to the valve cover like the older "B"s? If so, that oil just collects in a tray in the governor and runs by gravity down that tube into the tray in the valve cover to drip on the exhaust valves. So, it would not be coneected to the pressure side at all, and likely would not oil until the engine was running and flinging oil all around the governor case.

It's starting to come back to me.....no, it's gone again.

The Tube from governor to the valve cover, and the valve cover are open. The tube does run on the outside of the engine. I poked a wire and blew air into the governor, so that hole is open. I had the tube off and ran the tractor for a short time and no oil came out of the hole in the gov. How do you get to that pan in the gov., without taking off the covers that the operators manual says not to mess with, to check for rust or such, as the tractor did sit for a 2 years? Thanks for all the info, I would have no idea of what to check for otherwise.

Once again, I agree with Frank about the best way to do the job...but...last night I looked at my A (partially disassembled) and I think you could remove the bearing cover from the flywheel side of the governor and access the oil trough. I would remove the mag first, then remove the cover carefully. You can get to the trough through the slots in the gear. Replace the cover with the gaskets/shims in the same way they were removed. By the way, the oil trough in my governor housing has a little "wall" of rust scale built up around the opening.

I took the cover off the Gov. The inside was wet with oil, there is no rust there, the bearings in the cover were also wet with oil. The system seems to be working but not pushing as much oil as I was expecting. I was reluctant to take the cover off the gov. after reading the operators manual but I had no problem. I learned something about the tractor so this has not been a total waste of time. Thanks Frank and James for your time and input. I am curious about the wheels on my tractor, 36 inch round spokes. Most A tractors that I have seen have 39 inch. James, what size is on your 38 A?
Thanks again
Allan R.

Allan,

Not much oil gets to the valves by this method! That may be the reason for the change to the later A's.
My A had cast centers with 36" split rims. The rims and tires are completely shot. I have a pair of original 36" flat spoke wheels from another 1938 A that I have blasted and painted and will install on my A. I have a new pair of 12.4 x 36 tires that I will use on the wheels. I think 36" is fairly common on the early A's and 38" on the newer. There are several people on this board that can give you much better info than I on the correct wheels and tires, you might want to post another question.

As long he is careful about keeping the endplay shims in place, he could just slide the governor shaft out after removing the mag. That ought to get him about as close as he'll get without taking the entire case off. Years ago, I cleaned those cases with my electrolysis bath, and then painted the inside with Glyptal, even in the tray. I made sure the holes were clear, but it would oil much better when things were clean and slick.

Unfortunately, the right way is to remove the govnernor case in one piece and flip it over and inspect/clean. At that time it's a good chance to reinstall the fanshaft and reset the heel and lash of the fanshaft bevel gears.

Frank is exactly right...I have a '38 A and it is oiled the same way. The '39 is basically a '38 with the styled sheetmetal. The governor flings oil into a trough on the front inner wall of the governor housing. The oil then runs (by gravity)thru a tube that leads to the valve cover. In the top of the valve cover there is a trough that fills with oil and it has two small holes located over the exhaust valves to drip oil. Check for rust buildup in the valve cover trough and check the line leading to the valve cover. Also make sure the trough in the governor housing is clean. If the tractor has sit without running for years there may be rust in all these places from condensation. (Don't ask how I know!) This system is gravity feed and only oils after the governor flings enough oil into the trough and it makes its way down to the valves.
