I have never owned a JD and need a good lawn mower. Is the 112 a good machine? What should I look for in a used 112? thanks for your assist.

Raise the rear end off the ground and see if the rear wheels flop up and down. Check for grease seal leaks at the ends of the axles.

In addition to what G/Man said, some (later ones) had Kohler engines, others Tecumseh. Some had anti vibration engine mounts, others the engines bolted right to the tractor frame. Some had wide rear tires, others narrow. I have 5 of the high backed seat 112's. Why so many is a long story for later!

If what you're looking at has the Tecumseh engine in it, it is SUPPOSED to have a large cast iron counter weight bolted to the top of the engine. That weight countered the vibration of the HH 100 engine and they're often missing. Many considered them a nuisance & once removed for whatever reason, they were just not replaced. Not a BIG problem but.

Check the leading nose of the deck for rust through and/or stress cracks. If the metal is still there cracks are no problem but if it's just rust, hard to weld.

Very repairable machines and once adjusted right they're pretty good mowers!

Yes, they're pretty good machines. There are a couple of variations - the early ones ('66 and '67) had the round fenders and pan seats like the 110s, and the later ones ('68 and up) switched to the fender deck like newer mowers have. Look for the same things you'd look for on any other mower - engine condition, deck condition, belts, tires, etc. You'll also want to make sure the variator (mechanical variable speed) unit works correctly. www.weekendfreedommachines.com is a good website for all sorts of info on using and collecting JD lawn and garden tractors.
