White smoke

I have a JD630 Gas. It starts and runs well. Over the weekend I topped off the fluids. The only one that was very low at all was the transmission oil, and I added oil until it began to weep out of the bolt hole on the left side of the tractor (just right of the flywheel). I topped off the crankcase oil and it is below the "full" line on the dipstick.

When I started it mid week I left a coffee can on the breather-stack for about 30 seconds before I remembered to remove it, so even though the 630 was running, it must have been gasping for air.

NOW - HERE IS THE ISSUE - it is bellowing white smoke today, and it wasn't doing this the last time I started it. I pulled one plug, and it was a bit oily. I am worried that by leaving the stack closed, the old engine found some new ways to get air, and in the process loosened some seals somewhere that is putting excess oil into the cylinder. I am not much of a mechanic, but I would be interested in some opinions about what caused the 630 to start smoking overnight.

Thanks in advance.

Yup - I am sure that is it.

I can't believe I didn't catch that. I even opened the breather-can and looked for water or too much oil and noticed that the upper-screen was wet with oil, but it didn't occur to me that it would have enough suction to pull excess oil into the flow. I am still going to have to do some cleanup, but I feel better already.

I think I will invest in a breather-top and get rid of the coffee-can;-)

Many MANY thanks for the reply

I'm with Glen. It seems if these tractors are left outside even though the air stacks are covered that water can find it's way into the air cleaner. I would clean the air cleaner cup, install new oil, install new plugs, drain the carburetor to remove as much water as possible and try to run your tractor with as much choke as possible for the first few minutes to try to suck out all the water from the idle passages of the carburetor. If this doesn't clear up the running of the tractor you will likely have to remove the carburetor for cleaning. Hope this helps. Mike

Sucked in oil from oil bath air cleaner ?? Even though you had the can on it make sure there isn't water in oil bath cup.
