I'm not particular about any certain brand, but there are more Deeres around. I'm looking for something around 100 hp, up to 140 or so, under about $20k, cheaper would be better, not particular about the cab, but it would be nice in the winter although I'm used to not having an enclosed one. It will be used with a loader, JD 535 baler, bale mover (10 bale/stackmover), Haybuster bale processor, pulling tree trunks, etc. I'm used to an 1855 Oliver, which did all of that easily, but no loader, like it very much, but need something different. There is a 4240 powershift, 7900 hours, "looks" good, for $18,900. 4440s are about $25,000 around here with 8-9,000 hours and no OH, the way it looks. I see one 4440 with 9600 hours, says OH but doesn't say when, quad, new paint and interior, for $16900, it's a couple hundred miles away. 4020s seem to be about $12000, no cab, with some work done, none less than $10,000. 4430/4230, a couple around, about $13,500 with 7000+ hours. On the IH side, 1086s are around $12000 at the least, 886/986 as well, not many of those around though. I don't see any 66 or 06 series around that are big enough. Suggestions or advice? I'd like something solid, reliable, good transmission. I'm in north central NE. Thanks.

I bought a 4230 a year and a half ago and so far I have been very pleased with it. I have used it on a NH664 baler and a Greenbelt bale carrier hauling 12 bales. If you are interested you can search the Implement form under "Greenbelt" to see pictures of it in action.

I have had to do some minor repairs with it, but nothing unexpected for a tractor that age. My only dissapointment is that it seems to like to use a lot of fuel, especially running wide open down the road hauling hay.

What about a 4040? only 90 horse, but probabbly would work for what you are doing? A little newer, a little quieter cab and a little less fuel consumption. Same basic tractor as a 4230.

My two cents.

John

I was on the phone/internet most of yesterday, there simply aren"t many around in that size other than what I mentioned, within a couple hundred miles, but still looking. (this sentence off topic tractor) I drove a 1086 IH today, 2600 original hours, been sitting for 8 years, $16900, filters on it were all that old, except for hydraulic filter, brand new, steering seemed harder than it should, I wonder about the hydraulics, looked very good, hated the shifter, and the tractor has no take-off power in low rpms, kills easily. I saw a 2wd 4040 powershift today, no cab, oil leaks all over the back, probably just the couplers, gauge read 5000+ hours, I"m pretty sure either it turned over or had a new gauge at that time, I didn"t have time to stop where it was to ask questions or drive. I also saw a 4230, new paint, 7000 hours, about $9000 in transmission work (quad), engine never been touched. I drove it, very nice, started right up. I"m paranoid, the engine sounded good, but it almost didn"t sound "smooth". Never been around them, maybe normal or in my head, everything seemed to work. They want $17500 firm, plus it could use tires within a couple years. The 4240 I mentioned before, I called on it, the guy didn"t know it"s history at all, almost 8000 hours and no work on it probably, $18000, and he wasn"t around today when I could go to look at it. 4230, trans and engine oh 7000 hours ago, new tach unknown hours before that, I didn"t go look at it but $13500. Thanks for the reply and info.

90 HP would work well, I have some hills up on the north section, if I get up there with a mover it can take a few horses. Also I"d like to get a bigger mover, I have a few hundred bales a year about 8 miles from my place, and I"ve been hiring someone to move them (hauls 23, 3 rows of 5, 8 on the top, old truck mover with a 1086IH), would take me a while to move them and my mover is not very good. Wouldn"t want to go a whole lot smaller.

Those bale carriers are very nice, a few people around here have 8 bale models, single row, they cost a little over $10000 new, no used ones around now, seen them for $7500 for more than 10 years old/worn. There are some 12 bale models made locally that look very good, and Vermeer makes a 14 bale model, but you"d be looking at $20000 or more I"d guess, no used ones. Most people have a one or two bale carrier and just pile them like that (like I said I do 10) and then come in with a stackmover. Others move them to a corner with the single row mover, and then come in with a bigger stackmover and move them home. Don"t have the kind of money a person would need to throw around on things like that.

Looks nice. I have a 630 gas with a loader. Makes a good loader tractor, but I don"t quite picture pulling a baler/haybuster/balemover with that type of tractor. Kind of interesting to run with 20,000 + pounds behind it, up and down hills etc.... Might be fun to try at least. I suppose that"s quite a bit heavier than my 630.
