New JD M owner needs HELP!

Both the owners & IT manuals call for 6 1/2 quarts of gear oil in the transmission/differential, & show one drain plug on my '48 M. I drained out almost 4 qts.,(& thinking it was just low), I put new oil in, & it was full after almost 4 qts. After driving it a while, I removed the filler plug, only to find that my new oil was just as dirty & brown as before, It had to mix with the 2 1/2 qts. of old oil that did not drain out. I've asked around, but nobody knows how to drain the last 2 1/2 qts. ANYBODY HAVE AN M, OR KNOWS SOMEONE THAT DOES? Thanks!!!

Dan,

CPeter seems to have you covered, but here are a couple more suggestions for a topic with little glamour.

The old books call for using Kerosene. Diesel is another option, but look at some of the more popular engine/crankcase flushes...these are much more technologically efficient and made to do what you need...use the volumes proportionally to the transmission as you would the crankcase.

As CPeter said, try elevating the wheels and running the tractor for 2-3 minutes, let it set, and do it again a couple of more times to get "the sludge" going...after the last run, then drain immediately [BE SAFE!

I your M has been setting for a long time, some of those deposits may have to be removed manually. As a replacement, I use the 85-140 which has a little flexibility.

I like to take the rear and top covers off and look around inside. The rear of the trans axle will hold back some of the oil/sludge as there is a partition between the ring gear area and the rest of the transmission. This is a good change to check out the condition of things inside there and get it good and clean. You may want to fill it full of kerosene or diesel and run it with the transmission in gear and one wheel off the ground (well blocked) to clean it out. also a long handled brush will help. Refill it it with new gear oil. I like 140 wt GL1.
