I have a nieghbor who wants to give me her old A. I looked at it yesterday and it has 1 flat on the rear. Missing 1 front off the rollamatic. The Engine is missing both spark plugs and it has sat outside for a long time so the engine is stuck. The Clutch does not move. The left brake is stuck as well. I need to move this tractor about 1/4 mile or so and do not have a trailer. Has anyone ever towed one like this that far with another tractor. I have use of a hard road for this. The tractor is in a field.
Any suggestions what to watchout for or do would be great.
Thanks Joe Free Deere

i used a round bale mover to move my old b model. it is the kind that has 2 forks to go under the bale, i put a piece of 2 inch pipe under the front of tractor and pick up front end with the lift and pipe.

good luck

Congrats!
Here"s one guys opinion...once upon a time we used a"round-bale" 3pt fork to cradle the front end of an A to tow home. We had a tractor on good wheels & tires though...but if the one front tire will hold air and if you had a heavy enough tractor with the bale forks, you might be able to "cradle" the rear-end of the A, chain it down to the forks and ease your way home. The front end should "trail" along...it" only 1300 + feet away!!

Just free advice...
Good luck...
Doug

Might not be a bad idea to loosen the trans. and diff. drain plugs and drain off any water and then check oil level. I towed a 70 rear end home once a few miles. It had no front end so I just backed the trailer under the front chained it loosly and away I went.

JOE FREE -- Call one of those JarDain auto wrecker guys -- the ones with a tilt-n-extend bed and a winch to pull the beast up onto the wrecker bed. This system works like a charm! (PatB)

Hi joe,

Congrats on getting a free Deere.

Are you planning on fixing this up, using it for parts, or selling it? Better see what she expects you to do with it. Feelings can be hurt.

Pulling it shouldn't be a problem but you'd better air up the tire. You'll ruin the rim for sure if you take it down a hard surface road. That and the county would be a bit put out if they see you tearing up thier blacktop. The froze brake assembly can be removed with three bolts under the platform. You can leave it off and use the other one for stopping as long as it works. Take it SLOW.

You sure you can't get a trailer and winch somewhere?

Thanks for the advice. I did fail to mention that the rim is rusted pretty bad on the side with the flat tire. I don't know how bad, but it looks like it could be through rust in some areas. Not a bad idea on Jacking up the front end and towing it that way. I may have a trailer that could take that weight. Thanks for the help. I figure if I could get my wife to ride on the trailering tractor. At least she could jump off if things got out of control. But we planned to take it slow!!:-)

Take both brakes off. They are held on by 3 bolts each. Once removed, the gear on the end of them won't be engaging the rest of the drive train and the transmission/ rear end will turn freely whether the clutch or engine are stuck or not. Be carefull, however, since you won't have any brakes!
