Help! Mod. M lube question (thanks)

Can the entire 6 1/2 qts. of trans./diff. oil be drained out of an M through a drain plug? I get a little less than 4 qts. out, & can only get the same amount back in, & after running a short time, it is as dirty as what I drained out, probably mixing with the 2 1/2 qts. that did'nt drain out. My owners manual, & IT man. both say 6 1/2 qts. & after searching the archives here, I still need help. HOW TO GET THE REMAINING 2 1/2 QTS. OUT? This is a '48 M with PTO & belt pulley. Thanks for your help.

Ken,

I"m not familiar with the M tractor, but on my "51 B, there are two drain plugs for the transmission/rear end. One is a big plug under the transmission, and the other is under the rear end. The drawbar could cover the rearend one. Both have to be open to completly drain.

My manual also suggests draining the oil, and then putting three gallons of kerosene in the tractor, and then jacking up a wheel and run it awhile. Or just drive it around again and drain.

This might help if you have a lot of sludge

It could be that the old oil is so thick that it won't drain out My cousin and I are working on a 50 M right now. We had to take the axle housing off to put new brakes in. First we drained the trans oil.When we got it apart we could see inside the trans.There was at least an inch and a half of thick oil in the bottom,it was almost as thick as grease. We put the plug back in and poured diesel fuel in the trans. We're goimg to let it soak for awhile and see what it does.
