What would likely cause my 1977 4430 to burn up A/C clutches? I replaced one and then the new one did the same thing! Thanks Ken hart

All of the things mentioned below. Especially low voltage. Is is cycling in and out too much? Real cold then warm? Make sure the thermostatic switch is good. Expansion valve could be plugging also. Aftermarket switches cost less and work just as well.

I would guess your pressure goes sky hi ,and then pump drives hard and recks the clutch.Make sure condensor is clean at rad.Possible expantion valve trouble,dryer plugged ,moisture in system,I would at the least get a set of gauges on there and watch for too high pressures,.If thats it replace exp.valve,dryer and flush system out and evacuate before another attempt.

1.) Low voltage to the coil.

2.) Defective compressor, assuming you have replaced just the clutch, not the complete assembly.

You need to check and make sure you are getting a full 12 volts to it. Also check to see if your compressor turns excessively hard.
