Been a Ford 8n owner for several years and it's time to move up to something bigger. I have been using the ford discussion forum on this site for several years and have learned a great deal. I have about 20acres of hay to mow and small bale, pull a manuare spreader, back blade and a 3 point 55gal sprayer.
Found a 4010D for sale but know little to nothing about the JD tractors.
The 4010 has 4700 hrs, heavy front end, dual hydraulics, like new tires, not sure what year it is. When I go to look at the tractor anything specific I should look for? any specific questions I should ask? Can someone give me a resonable estimate range as to its value?
Thanks

The 4010 is one of my favorite JD models (can you tell by my handle name?) :) I"m currently restoring my 1961 4010D and have no problems getting the parts. Easy to work on. And no doubt built to keep going and going and going....

Thanks for the great information, however no one mentioned what these tractors typically sell for. I realize it is difficult to put a price to something without seeing it, but if someone could give me a dollar range, say for something in poor but operating condition to something in excellent condition it would sure help.

Thanks,

I can give you some info. The 4010 is a very good tractor. They were built from 1960 to 1963. Parts avalilablity is very good. Other than the usual things to look for in an old tractor check the following items.

Charging system. Is it the original 24 volt or has it been changed to 12 volt? Either way works, but be aware which system it has.

Check for oil leaking around the lower wishbone piece that the lower three point hitch arms connect to. Not a major fix, but something to look for.

There are 6 holes on the left side of the block. If they are dry, nothing to worry about. If the seals on the sleeves start to go either oil or coolant will leak out. This usually indicates an engine overhaul is in the near future.

Check the underside of the fuel tank. They have been known to rust out.

The PTO speeds are changed by changing the stub shaft. There is a pin under the stub shaft that shifts gears inside the transmittion. If it was forced then a pin breaks and you can't get it to shift speeds. The tractor has to be split to fix it. If you don't think you need to change then this may not be a big deal.

Hope this helps

John

I would reinforce what was said about the pto stub shaft...it is held in place with 4 3/8 inch bolts that are just 1 and 1/8 inch long..so you really don't want these to vibrate loose as they can break that little pin up in the transmission that requires a split to fix.

I highly recomend taking those out one at a time and cleaning the hole well and them locktiting them in place, fresh bolts and lock washers as well ( at least that is what I did ).

I think that is the most troublesome point on the 4010. ( Based on my broad knowledge of owning one for 2 months and using it about 5 hours, haha. )

Excellent tractor, excellent advise!! Also find out when, if ever, the injection pump was rebuilt and injectors. The pump alone will set you back around $600 without r&r labor. This is on any diesel, not just a 4010 problem. Nothing to turn down the tractor deal about, just allow for it in the price you pay. Nice smooth tractor to own!!
